Great hat with the construction quality you expect from 5.11. However, I would love to see 5.11 come out with a wide-brim version with a clip on neck flap for when you need the ultimate sun protection. I would still use both for different situations.

Hat is good quality and I use it often. However, I wish 5. 11 made a wider brim sun hat with a neck flap, or something more substantial if you're planning on spending the day out in the full sun. This hat provides some shade, but on those days where you're spending all day out in the heat and want more coverage, it leaves you a little short on protection

Probably the worst hat for hot weather.

I expected this hat to meet or exceed what I typically used as a Marine. Sadly, the material is absolutely terrible in hot weather environments above 90F. When wearing the hat, itll actually collect your sweat until saturation and start dripping everywhere. There zero evaporation, zero cooling, zero ventilation going on. Its similar to just wearing a trash bag on your head. Whatever supposed jersey like material they advertise on the sweat piece doesnt come close to the standard USMC Marpat boonie.

I go to 5.11 for the basics. This hat is a good do-everything boonie. I read the description and I knew what Id be getting. The material is synthetic and coated. I generally prefer the more natural feel of coated nyco ripstop. This seems like it leans towards being better in the rain. Its a little heavy for warm weather protection even with the vents, but colder and wetter conditions seems more the right speed for this hat. Color is as expected. The hidden map pocket is not something I use.

Quality of the hat is great. It feels very light and cool. A little disappointed with the sizing, I followed the size chart on the website, measuring my head as instructed, however, based on the chart I went with the L/XL, and it is too big for me, making it look more like a bucket hat not a boonie hat. I wish I could send it back for exchange but it I'm downrange and it took over 20 days just to make it in country.

Well made boonie. I wish it came in a small to medium size. The medium to large size is too big but it works, sorta. When I tighten the adjustment cord to the back of my head, theres about an inch of open space back there so the hat feels like its floating around. I may try to shrink the hat a little to see if that helps with the fit. It is a nice hat though.

An Improvement on the Traditional Boonie

Not your typical Boonie hat. I would classify it as an "improved" version. I used a measuring tape to properly size my melon and, the fit is pretty darn good. It provides good coverage. I typically run the back brim flipped up like a Fedora. I've owned scads of the surplus store Boonies over the years and, this hat is definitely worth the extra scratch.

At first glance this Boonie is exactly what I am looking for. The material has a great hand and it is the exact color (TDU Khaki) I wanted. The internal band feels great to the touch.Upon closer inspection the seams are asymmetrical and misaligned. The loops around the outside band are very poorly sewn, some are pulled tight against the hat, some are sewn very slack, it is clearly only for decoration. I ordered a M/L and thought it would be on slightly big side. I wear a 7 1/4" baseball cap, which is on the smaller end of the spectrum. However, the hat runs very small, it is so tight that I don't think I'd be able to wear it for an extended period of time. From reading the other reviews it's apparent that the sizes are inconsistent. This hat will be going back and I probably won't order another, not worth the time or another disappointment. I've always regarded 5.11 as a semi-premium brand and I believe the company feels the same way, given their prices. Although it is clear that they are no different than most brands. Whoever makes their hats doesn't have any sense of pride in their work. The hat is made in China and it certainly shows.

I purchased this hat for a camping trip. It worked great. The hat kept the sun out of my eyes and kept me cool. The only thing I can complain about is plastic adjuster thing (not sure what to call it). I like the fact the tubular draw cord can go into the hat. It is a nice feature. However, once inside the top of the hat and with a little pressure, the plastic adjuster can hit the top of your head making the hat feel uncomfortable. I am still giving it 5 stars. I learned how to get around the issue. The hat kept the sun out of my face and kept me nice and cool. I use the hat around the house.

I asked for these about two years ago to go along with the TDUs and they're a perfect match, much better than the various military surplus knockoffs that don't match or hold up after one wash.I have all the colors except the multicam in MED/LRG and LRG/XLG. The reason for the two sizes was because my first order about a month ago was for MED/LRG but they were a bit snug but not lethally constricting so I ordered the LRG/XLG and they finally showed up yesterday. The khaki and green LRG/XLG fit the same as the MED/LRG but the black and navy are looser as they should be which tells me the khaki and green boonies were mislabeled with the wrong size. Unfortunately I doubt I can return them because Ive already washed them which leads me to the next part of my review. I had a similar problem with the TDU trousers I bought about three years ago but I needed something to wear for work and they didnt cutoff the blood flow so I wore them until the replace pair came in that fit.When my first order came in I gave one the wash test and was immediately surprised that it retained its shape perfectly and didnt fade like the knockoffs do! I washed the others but only air-dried them all with the brim gently rolled up a bit because I dont want to incur any undue shrinkage from drying. My second order I washed them all this time based on the results of the first order and was not disappointed, so on the wash test they easily get 10 out of 5 stars!!!!My only suggestions would be to correct the sizing discrepancy (and I will reorder), make the brim a bit wider (no more than an inch), add Coyote Brown & real khaki (not just this desert sand version) color options, and loosen the foliage band a bit because as compared to the real McCoys its little more than decoration holder for the 5.11 logo. One way to fix the sizing would be to add another drawstring along the base of the hat to control the size like a one-size-fits-all waterproof rain boonie I have.Also, for the premium price I would expect them to be made in the USA like the U.S. Army and Air Force, theirs are made by the Bernard Cap Company in Hialeah, Florida, not somewhere in China like these are.Overall, they are the best commercial/non-MILSPEC boonies Ive found and wouldve gotten five stars had the sizes been correct.

So far the hat has lived up to its potential, it feels great it's easy to store if needed and the map pocket inside functions nicely, the stitching is well crafted and the color is nice to look at, the only issue I have with this hat is that the chin strap piece is stiched in place by only a couple stiches and that's fine and dandy but it's already showing signs of tear at the stitching. To make this hat better it would have been a better idea to have it looped on something or have a brass fitted hole that comes out of the side to lace up paricord or some other metiral, it could be when I wear it I compress it to much when it sits on my back so it's not as floppy when I'm running that's why I give this hat a 4 out of 5, it's great but with a little more time from the designer it could be made amazing, I'd recommend this hat though, I will make the small change myself still a great hat and will be wearing it for a long time

The quality of the hat is tremendous; solid, thick brim with thick overall feel for the rest of the hat.It handled the first day outside in 93 degree heat (direct sunlight) with zero issues. The 65% poly, 35% cotton ratio appears to be the "sweet spot" for this type of a hat. Handles heat, sun, and wicks moisture with perfection. I would imagine that it also does a nice job in rain. We will see.I expect this will be the last boonie hat that I will ever need. Extremely impressed with this product.
